Marsh Warbler - New for the SOG recording area

So another species that has been a long time coming in its addition to the SOG list is the Marsh Warbler. I had looked around several locations in the Wakering area recently in the hope of finding one, given there had been a few around the UK recently, but it was Tim Bourne who came across a singing bird in the evening off 9th June at Benfleet Downs.

I saw the WhatsApp news on this find rather late and had no daylight hours left to make the dash to the site so I would have to wait till the following morning and hope it was still present.

Up and out at 4:30am saw me on site a little after 5am and the bird was duly found singing besides the path. It was generally a little elusive in the reeds and make short flights to nearby bushes along rhr railway line however it did pop up a couple of times where some half decent but low light / grainy images were obtained.

A cracking bird that was often in full song with a host of other species within it song, a fantastic mimic. I personally heard Brambling, Cetti's Warbler and Pied Wagtail being uttered.

Hopefully the bird will still be present in a couple of days when I plan to revisit.

So further visits have produced further sightings as well as additions to the song soundtrack with today hearing Quail as well as Blackbird and a very good Bee-eater impression. Quality bird.
