Thailand : February 2011

Way back in February 2011 I visited Thailand in order to see Spoon-billed Sandpiper, this was my number one World birding target, must see bird. Unusually I went with a tour group rather than my usual do it my self trip. The trip was with Wildwings. I was successful in my quest to see the Spoonie with several encountered at the Salt Pans along with Nordmann's Greenshank.

After the Spoon-billed Sandpiper my next targets were the two Pitta's, Banded and Gurneys and again I was successful with these. A few other excellent birds were seen but I found Thailand an extremely difficult country for birding with often forest tracts completely devoid of birdlife. Still the big three were seen and that is the main thing.

Banded Pitta is still one of the best birds I have ever seen and could quite happily have another trip to just see this species alone, it really was something else.

Banded Pitta; probably the best bird in the world
