The Gambia & Senegal : November - December 2022 (part 1)

The following are a select few images from the trip to The Gambia and Senegal at the end of November into early December.

The overall highlights for myself was the stunning display of 10,000+ African Scissor-tailed Kites late afternoon at the roost island near Kaolack in Senegal, something I'd really wanted to see for a number of years now, and improving on my Egyptian Plover images taken in 2003. The five birds at Kaur Wetlands did not disappoint.

Elsewhere there were generally plenty of birds though I think there was less than 20 years ago. The coastal strip around the hotels has been developed and where once were fields are now buildings and rubbish.

Abuko is now virtually surrounded by buildings which is also a change from my last visit and the lake was overgrown thus missing photo opportunities I was hoping for with species such as Giant Kingfisher.

Despite this still plenty to see which I would have probably enjoyed a lot more if I hadn't caught a very bad cold on my second day incountry which prevented me from birding on some days and feelng like an extra from the Walking Dead. I still have a sinus infection even now from the cold, some 7 weeks later.

In addition to the birds were plenty of colourful Butterflies and amazing Dragonflies and at time these almost took over our days.
